Google Search adds Gemini 2.5 Pro, AI Deep Search, and agentic local calling

Google upgraded AI Mode within Google Search with Gemini 2.5 Pro model and Deep Search in AI Mode. Plus, Google added AI-powered local business calling to check on local pricing, an agentic search feature.

These upgrades are rolling out in the U.S. for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

Gemini 2.5 Pro in AI Mode. Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro is rolling out to AI Mode within Google Search.

  • “Gemini 2.5 Pro excels at advanced reasoning, math and coding questions, helping you with your complex queries with links to learn more,” Google said.

Those who subscribe to AI Pro or AI Ultra can select the 2.5 Pro model from a drop-down menu in the AI Mode tab.

The default model in AI Mode will continue to be helpful for fast, all-around assistance on most questions.

Deep Search on Gemini 2.5 Pro. Google also said Deep Search is getting the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. Google wrote:

  • “Deep Search is our most advanced research tool in Google Search, helping you save hours by issuing hundreds of searches, reasoning across disparate pieces of information and crafting a comprehensive, fully-cited report in minutes. Deep Search is especially useful for in-depth research related to your job, hobbies, or studies. It’s also a valuable tool when making big life decisions, like purchasing a new house or needing assistance with financial analysis.”

Agentic local calling. Google is also adding AI-powered local business calling in the U.S. This agentic capability is directly in Google Search and Google calls it “AI-powered calling to local businesses.”

  • To use it, you can search for something like [pet groomers near me] and you’ll see a new option in the results to “Have AI check pricing.”
  • You can then submit your request, and Google Search will call local businesses on your behalf.
  • Google will then consolidate the information about appointments and services from different businesses to present you with a range of options.

Here’s what local business calling looks like:

Why we care. Google is investing heavily in what it calls the future of Google Search. These improvements and changes are available to subscribers only. However, Google will undoubtedly expand these to non-subscribers in the future.

Plus, this first glimpse into the agentic experiences in Google Search can be somewhat revealing to search marketers and how their clients might be able to get business through this new version of Google Search.
